Inspiration

Ingrid Smith Rijneveld - ArtistFor as long as I can remember I have drawn and painted. Initially as a child, inspiration came from animals and in particular one pictorial encyclopaedia of the animal kingdom given to me as a birthday present by my parents, which still stands on my bookshelves.

Later, architectural subjects came to the fore, the older and more weathered the more appealing. These urban landscapes still hold my attention. The play of light and colour on bricks and mortar I find endlessly fascinating and Italy in particular, a source of unlimited ideas.

Interspersed are my water subjects, beaches and waterways, mostly inspired by the countryside around my home in Victoria in southern Australia, as well as still life subjects from the garden and local farmers’ markets.

I hope my paintings reflect the pleasure I feel from looking at these subjects and strike a chord of recognition in the viewer.
